PADI Advanced Open Water

Going inside a wreck

Any certified diver can swim past a wreck. This is the course that teaches you to go inside one. Four dives on Roatan’s wrecks, a short boat ride off West End, with sites picked around conditions on the day. Training dives stay within 30 meters / 100 feet. Line work, wreck mapping, and finding your way back out of a compartment when the silt comes up behind you. Three to four days in West End.

Wreck Diver course FAQ

Do I need Advanced Open Water for the Wreck Diver course?

Yes. PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent, minimum age 15. Both wrecks sit well below 18 meters, so an Open Water card isn’t enough on its own. If you need the Advanced first we can run the two back to back with us in West End.

Yes, on the later dives, with a line, a light and an instructor beside you. PADI calls it limited penetration: you stay inside the light zone with a continuous guideline back to open water. It isn’t cave diving and nobody’s asking you to squeeze through anything.

Usually El Aguila and the Odyssey, both a short boat ride off West End, depending on conditions on the day. The Aguila broke into three sections in a hurricane, which makes it a forgiving first penetration: big openings, plenty of light, and green moray eels that have lived in the holds for years. The Odyssey is the bigger of the two and more intact.

It’s worth it. Nitrox gives you more no-decompression time at wreck depths, so you get longer inside. We fill Nitrox on site, so plenty of divers run the two specialties in the same week.

Three to four days, depending on the boat schedule and how quickly the line drills come together. That includes the theory portion as well as the four dives.

Yes. Our morning two-tank trip visits the wrecks regularly and any Advanced diver can join. You stay outside the hull. Going in is what this course changes.

What is wreck diving in Roatan like?

Roatan’s wrecks sit in clear water a short boat ride off West End. Visibility often runs 20 to 30 meters, so you see the whole hull long before you’re near it. Water sits 26 to 29°C year round, so no drysuit and no gloves in most conditions. Wreck diving in Roatan is warm, bright and close to shore, which is rarer than it sounds.

What comes after Wreck Diver?

Wreck and Deep run well together, since both of these hulls sit at the depth where the Deep card earns its place. Five specialties plus Rescue Diver makes you a PADI Master Scuba Diver.

PADI Deep Diver

Three dives, two days. Certified to 40 meters / 130 feet.

Peak Performance Buoyancy

One day, two dives. The skill that makes you a better diver.

Daily Certified Fun Dives

Morning two-tank trips visit the wrecks. Advanced and up.
