Open Water is the certification most people mean when they say they’re a certified diver. Do the PADI eLearning at home. Give us two to three days in West End, Roatan and we’ll handle the rest. Shallow-water skills off the beach first, then four dives on the Mesoamerican Reef. You finish qualified to 18 metres with a buddy, no instructor needed, anywhere in the world. The card doesn’t expire.

Open Water course FAQ
Do I need any scuba experience to start?
No. Open Water is the first full scuba certification and it assumes you’ve never breathed underwater. You need basic swimming ability, reasonable health and a signed PADI medical form. That’s the whole list.
Is there a swimming test?
Yes, and it isn’t timed. Swim 200 metres any stroke, or 300 with mask, fins and snorkel. Then float or tread water for 10 minutes. Nobody’s marking your technique.
How deep can I dive with an Open Water certification?
18 metres / 60 feet as an adult. Divers aged 12 to 14 hold the same limit but dive with a certified adult. Ten and eleven year olds certify as Junior Open Water Divers to 12 metres, with a PADI Pro or a certified parent.
How long does the Open Water course take in Roatan?
Two to three days here, once the eLearning is done. Finish the theory before you fly and your days on Roatan are spent in the water instead of on a laptop.
Where do the training dives actually happen?
Skills run in shallow water off the beach in Half Moon Bay, a minute from the shop. The four open water dives run from our own dock on the Mesoamerican Reef. No pool anywhere in it.
Is a Honduras scuba certification recognised elsewhere?
Yes. PADI Open Water is the same certification worldwide, whether you earn it in Honduras, Egypt or Thailand. Get certified here in Roatan and the card works on any dive boat, anywhere, for life.
What if I need more than three days?
Then you take more days. Nobody gets signed off on a schedule. If a skill needs repeating we repeat it, and there’s no extra charge for the time.
What is learning to dive in Roatan like?
You’re training on the Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world, minutes from our dock in West End. Water sits between 26 and 29°C year round and visibility usually runs 20 to 30 metres. Calm, warm and shallow where you need it. Roatan is one of the easiest places in Honduras to learn, and one of the cheapest in the Caribbean to get certified.
