Coconut Tree Divers · West End, Roatan
We've been on this beach for over 19 years.
Coconut Tree Divers is a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre in Half Moon Bay, West End, Roatan, Honduras. We're based right on the water, a short walk from most accommodation and restaurants in West End. The Mesoamerican Reef is out front.
In 19 years we've logged 9,038 diving certifications. 5,091 Open Water Divers. 627 Divemasters. 485 PADI Instructors. Those numbers are from PADI's official records. We're not the newest dive shop on the island. We're one of the most experienced.
Our crew is multilingual, all PADI Instructors, and has the kind of reef knowledge that only comes from diving the same sites for years. We run a working dive operation, not a resort programme. When you dive with us, you're going out with people who do this every single day.
On the Deck
Coffee. Boats. Reef.
You'll be treated like family here. Wake up and come down to the deck for a free cup of Opalaca coffee before the first dive. The deck is large, covered, and open-air, with a direct view of Half Moon Bay. The boats go out at 9am.
We run four boat dives a day from this dock. The morning two-tank trip heads to the walls for Advanced divers. The afternoon single-tank dives are open to all certified levels. Night dives run on Tuesdays and Thursdays for groups of four or more.
Our boats are large platform boats with easy aluminium ladders. Purified water on board. Rental Canon cameras available on site through our in-house photographer, Alexandra.
The hyperbaric chamber at Cornerstone Medical Center at Anthony's Key Resort is five minutes away by taxi.
The Crew
The people behind the operation
Our team has been diving this reef for years. Every instructor is PADI certified, most with specialties across technical, recreational, and professional-level training.
Monty Graham
Owner
Monty's diving career started in 2001 as a commercial diver in Seattle. Since then he's dived across the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and Central America. He's a TDI/SDI Advanced Trimix Instructor, DSAT Trimix Instructor, and TDI/DSAT Sidemount Instructor — one of only two Advanced Trimix Instructors on Roatan. He also runs the Roatan Tec Center, which operates from this site.
William Welbourn
PADI Platinum Course Director
Will is a multiple Platinum PADI Course Director Award recipient — recognition given to a small group of Course Directors for consistently outstanding IDC outcomes globally. He's trained 485 PADI Instructors and 627 Divemasters from this centre. If you're going pro here, Will is who you train with.
Riley Essenberg
Manager
Riley keeps the operation running. She's been part of the CTD crew for years and knows the shop inside out. If you've got a question about scheduling, reservations, or what course to take next, she's the person to ask.
Ronnie
Boat Captain
Ronnie has been running these boats in West End for years. He knows the reef, he knows the weather patterns, and he knows when to call the south shore. You're in good hands on the water.
Also on the Team
Our instructors Paul, Coralie, and Adam round out the teaching crew with a range of specialties and language skills across English, French, Spanish, and others. Ask us about language preferences when you book — we'll match you with the right instructor for your course.
Frequently Asked Questions
Things people ask us most
Yes — we're one of the busiest dive shops in West End and sell out several days in advance. Walk-ins are welcome but we strongly encourage booking ahead. You can book online here or contact us directly.
All equipment, tank fills, boat fees, instruction, and your PADI certification card. PADI eLearning is included in the prices listed on our Pricing page. The only extra is the Roatan Marine Park fee — we ask you to pay the $10 reef donation, which goes directly toward conservation.
Reef-safe sunscreen only. Avoid products with Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Titanium Dioxide, and Petrolatum — these harm coral and marine life. Better option: wear a hat and a rashguard and skip the sunscreen entirely underwater.
If the west end is unsuitable, we move the boats to Flowers Bay on the south shore. It's a seven-minute drive from the shop. You still dive. This happens occasionally from October through January — the rest of the year, conditions are typically excellent.
Roatan's hyperbaric chamber is at Cornerstone Medical Center at Anthony's Key Resort — five minutes by taxi from the dive shop.
Tap water, no. We keep purified cold water at the shop and on the boats. Bottled water is available at the Coconut Tree Minisuper for around $1/gallon.
Yes. We have WiFi on the deck. It works well enough for uploading photos and checking messages between dives.
Yes. We have Canon cameras available for rental. Ask Alexandra at the shop for details and availability.
The official currency is the Honduran Lempira, but US Dollars are accepted everywhere on the island. There's one ATM in West End at Coniahs Mall. If you need a large cash withdrawal, plan a few days ahead or go into Coxen Hole.
1. I'm leaving tomorrow. 2. I'm not drinking tonight. 3. I love you. (Though honestly — we really do love you guys.)
