PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Course in Roatan

One day, two dives in West End. The specialty that changes every dive after it.

Why you’re burning air and bouncing off the reef

Ask an instructor and you’ll get the same answer most times: it’s the lead, not you. Too much of it, in the wrong place, and everything else you do underwater goes into fighting it. One day sorts out most of that. Two dives with us in West End, starting with a proper weight check off the beach, then trim, tank position and hovering until you stop thinking about it.

How the buoyancy course runs in Roatan

Two dives, one day, and the cheapest way to make a tank last longer.

Requirements: PADI Open Water Diver or equivalent, minimum age 10.

A Proper Weight Check

Shallow sand off the beach. Most divers leave lead behind.

Weight Put in Its Place

Trim pockets, tank position and where the lead actually sits.

Two Dives on the Reef

Fin pivots, hovering, then an obstacle course on dive two.

PADI PPB Certification

PADI PPB card submitted the day you finish your course in Roatan.

Skills that show up on every dive after this

Weighting, trim, hovering, breathing and streamlining, practiced over two full dives.

01

Weighting and Trim

Find the weight you need, then move it until you sit level.

02

Hovering, Hands Off

Hold a depth on your lungs. No sculling, no flutter kick.

03

Fin Pivots

The drill that hands depth control over to your breathing.

04

Streamlining Your Kit

Clip the danglers. Drag costs gas and drag catches coral.

Peak Performance Buoyancy FAQ

Do I need to be an experienced diver?

No. PADI Open Water or equivalent and you’re eligible, from age 10. Newly certified divers get the most out of it, because the habits get fixed before they set. Divers with a hundred logged dives book it too, normally after a deep dive went badly on gas.

For most divers, yes. Gas goes into hauling a body that isn’t level through the water, and into correcting depth you shouldn’t have lost. Take the extra lead out, stop finning to hold yourself up, and the gauge slows down.

One day. A weight check in shallow water off the beach, then two dives. It fits either side of another course, so divers here for a week normally stack it with Deep, Wreck or Enriched Air.

Yes. Advanced covers buoyancy in a single adventure dive alongside four other things. This gives it two full dives and nothing else competing for the time. Ask us when you book about crediting your Advanced buoyancy dive toward the specialty.

Open Water teaches you enough buoyancy to be safe. This one teaches you enough to be still. You’ll spend whole dives on weighting, trim and hovering instead of fitting them around mask clearing and regulator recovery.

Yes, from age 10, once they hold Junior Open Water. It’s one of the few specialties open at that age and a good one for young divers, who tend to be carrying far too much lead for their size.

What is buoyancy practice in Roatan like?

The water in front of the shop slopes away gently from the beach, so there’s shallow sand right in front of the shop to do a weight check properly instead of guessing on a boat. The reef starts a few minutes out. Water sits 26 to 29°C, so you’re in a 3mm or a rash guard, which means less lead to carry in the first place. Ask for a 15L tank if you’re a heavy breather. It changes your weighting, and working that out for yourself is the whole point of the course.
