Will You Be Ready to Work When You Finish?
A Divemaster card is your first PADI professional rating. The internship is where you learn to use it. Over six weeks you’ll join Coconut Tree’s day-to-day operation, assist instructors, work with certified divers, practice briefings and build the judgment that only comes from repetition. PADI requires 40 logged dives to begin and 60 to certify. Most interns finish with roughly 60–100 dives.
How the Roatan Divemaster Internship Works
1. Check Your Prerequisites
Advanced Open Water, Rescue, current CPR/first aid and the required medical paperwork. We check what you have before you arrive.
2. Join the Daily Operation
Dive into life at Coconut Tree Divers! You are training inside a working, busy West End dive shop, not a simulated one.
3. Build Professional Skills
Theory, skill circuits, mapping, assisting instructors, briefings and the actual routines behind a dive day.
4. Take Responsibility
As you progress, you work with certified divers and practice guiding and decision-making under supervision.
5. Get Certified
PADI requires 40 logged dives to begin and 60 to certify. Most Coconut Tree interns finish with considerably more experience than the minimum.
What You’ll Actually Learn
The PADI card matters. The judgment matters more. Over at least six weeks, you’ll work with real customers, different experience levels, changing conditions and different dive sites. That’s how you build the confidence and judgment a good Divemaster actually needs.You can’t teach that from a checklist. You learn it by doing the job, with experienced pros there to coach you along the way..
Briefings
Explain the site, route, procedures and the things divers actually need to know before they jump in.
Guiding
Monitor gas, conditions, navigation and diver comfort while making safe decisions in real time.
Course Assists
Work beside instructors with new divers and learn what students actually struggle with.
Shop Operations
Tanks, equipment, fills, schedules, guest flow and all the glamorous things that keep a dive center moving.
Boat Operations
Setup, loading, entries, exits, ladders and how the day actually moves from one trip to the next.
Site Knowledge
Learn West End sites well enough to brief, navigate and recognize when conditions have changed.
Problem Solving
The little judgment calls you cannot learn from a multiple-choice question.
People
Not technically printed on the card. Possibly the most important skill you will build.
Get Ready for a Ton of Free Diving
Dive as much as you can fit in, it's totally unlimited throughout your internship, (space on the boat permitting), and we’ll even help you build up to the 40 dives needed to start the program at no extra cost. Most interns leave with 60–100 dives, a ridiculous amount of experience, and a very real chance this whole thing changes your life.

What a Week at Coconut Tree Looks Like

Dive. A Lot.
Current schedule: 8:30 AM two-tank, 1:00 PM single and 2:30 PM single, with night dives by request.

Assist Real Courses
Open Water, Advanced, Rescue and other courses are running around you. You learn by being useful.

Become Part of the Shop
Some days you brief. Some days you guide. Some days tanks need moving and nobody holds a philosophical discussion first.
PADI Divemaster Internship FAQ
What are the Divemaster prerequisites?
You must be 18, hold Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver, and have current CPR and first aid training from the past 24 months. You also need a medical statement signed by a physician within the past 12 months.
Do I need 60 dives before I start?
No. PADI requires at least 40 logged dives to begin and 60 to certify. We’ll review your log and tell you how much diving to plan before the formal assessments.
What if I arrive with fewer than 40 dives?
We’ll start your internship by getting you in the water logging them at no extra cost, then move into the formal training once you’re there. It’s not a reason to delay your trip.
Is the diving really unlimited?
Yes, from the day you arrive until you finish, limited only by space on the boat. Most interns leave with somewhere between 60 and 100 dives logged.
Is this a working internship?
Yes. The formal PADI training runs inside Coconut Tree Divers’ day-to-day operation. You’ll assist courses, work with certified divers and learn shop and boat routines under staff supervision.
How long should I stay in Roatan?
Plan for at least six weeks. Extra time gives you more dives, more varied guests and more chances to assist different courses before certification.

You can work, guide and build experience. Or you can keep going to the IDC route and beyond. This is usually where the sensible plans begin to disappear.
